Philadelphia Faces Aftermath of Record Rainfall and Coastal Storm Impact
Philadelphia and its surrounding areas are grappling with the aftermath of a powerful coastal storm that brought record-breaking rainfall and widespread flooding. A NEXT Weather Alert remains in effect as residual impacts continue to pose challenges throughout Monday.
While the heaviest rain has subsided, light to moderate showers persist through midday, compounding the challenges faced by a region already saturated from the second consecutive weekend of heavy rainfall. Rainfall totals, ranging from 2-3 inches on average, have exceeded 5 inches in some areas within a 24-hour period, leading to significant flooding issues.
Numerous Flood Warnings are in place across the region as the water runoff from the heavy rain continues to inundate lower-lying areas. A Flood Watch for the entire area is extended until 6 pm, emphasizing the ongoing risk of flooding despite the tapering off of rain.
Philadelphia International Airport has recorded at least 2.20 inches of rain on Monday, breaking the daily rainfall record for December 18, surpassing the previous record set in 1977. Since the start of the storm on Sunday, Philadelphia has experienced a total of at least 3.01 inches of rainfall.
The impact of the coastal storm extends beyond rain, with strong winds causing damage and power outages. Reports of downed trees are widespread across the region, with wind gusts exceeding 60 mph along the coast and ranging from 30-40 mph inland. Wind conditions are expected to intensify again in the afternoon as colder air rushes in from the northwest.
Temperatures, which peaked at 63 degrees early Monday, are expected to drop into the low and middle 50s for the rest of the day. Along the shore, a Coastal Flood Advisory for New Jersey shore points and back bays remains in effect through 4 pm Monday, with reports of minor-moderate coastal flooding. The threat is expected to diminish into the evening after the midday high tide cycle.
As Philadelphia navigates the aftermath of this unusual weather event, residents are urged to remain cautious, stay informed about local advisories, and take necessary precautions to ensure safety amid lingering weather challenges.
